Overview

Egg-crate foam is a profiled polyurethane sheet whose surface is a regular field of peaks and valleys; it takes its name from the egg tray it resembles. The way it is made also explains the logic of the profile: a single foam block is passed between two opposed profiled rollers and split horizontally into two sheets that are mirror images of each other. Nothing is discarded in the middle and no offcut is created — which is exactly what makes a profiled surface this economical.

Why the profile makes a difference

A flat foam sheet meets the sound wave on one plane; part of the wave enters the material and part reflects back off the face. The profile changes two things. First, the effective surface area the sound touches increases for the same sheet size. Second, and more decisively, a graduated depth of material forms between peak and valley: instead of striking one hard face, the wave enters a medium that gets progressively denser, so less energy comes back off the surface. The absorption itself happens inside the material — in an open-cell structure, air moving between interconnected pores creates friction and the sound energy is converted to heat.

Thickness decides which frequencies it works on

A foam is effective over a range of wavelengths proportional to its thickness. Thin profiles soften the treble and upper mid-range, which is where speech echo, keyboard noise and general office noise live. Bass frequencies have far longer wavelengths and a thin profile does essentially nothing to them — that is the reason behind the complaint that 'the room went dull but the bass still rings'. Controlling bass takes thicker material and corner treatment. One fundamental limit is worth stating up front: foam **absorbs** sound, it does not **stop** it. What reduces sound passing through a wall into the next room is mass, and a foam sheet — profiled or flat — does not weigh enough for that. If the problem is what the neighbour hears, the answer lies in solutions with a heavy barrier layer.

The packaging and cushioning side

Egg-crate foam is not only an acoustic product. When the profiled surface meets an irregularly shaped object the peaks flex individually; the load spreads across a wide area instead of concentrating at one point, and the part stays where it was placed. That is why it is used as a top cushion inside carton and case lids, inside suitcases, bags and tool cases, and in display and shipping boxes. The air channels between the valleys let the surface breathe, which is an advantage wherever a surface is in contact for a long period — the same property is behind its use as a mattress topper and camping mat. The limit is clear here too: the profile softens the cushioning, it does not increase load capacity. With heavy parts what decides is the density and the thickness of flat material beneath the profile; a profiled surface on its own bottoms out under a heavy load.

Colour, mounting and practical notes

Anthracite, grey and white are the standard colours; anthracite is the one most often chosen for visible surfaces, both because it shows dust less and because it recedes visually. Mounting is done with the self-adhesive option or a suitable adhesive; in either case a clean, dry, dust-free surface is what determines how long the bond lasts. Sheets shipped compressed should be left free for a while after unpacking so the profile can recover its full form. Position the material clear of heat sources and moving parts; on vibrating surfaces it is safer to add a mechanical fixing than to rely on adhesive alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I choose egg-crate or pyramid foam?
Both do the same job; the difference is geometry, appearance and cost. Egg-crate comes out of a single block with no waste, so it is usually the more economical option, and it can double as a cushioning face in packaging. Pyramid gives a sharper, more ordered look, which is why it is preferred where studio aesthetics matter. If the need is general echo reduction, either will deliver.
Will it stop my neighbour hearing sound?
No. Egg-crate foam reduces echo and reflection inside the room. What stops sound passing through a wall is mass, and foam is a very light material. A transmission problem needs a solution with a heavy barrier layer.
Which thickness should I choose?
Thin profiles soften treble and upper mid frequencies, which is usually enough for speech echo and office noise. Music, drums and bass control need thicker material together with corner treatment.
Can it be used as a mattress topper?
Yes — that is one of the classic uses of the profile: the peaks flex individually to the shape of the body and the air channels between the valleys let the surface breathe. Thickness and density should be chosen according to how often it will be used.
