In the automotive supply chain a part is usually handled several times before it reaches the assembly line, and every transfer brings the same risks: a scratch on a painted or plated surface, a mark on a machined face, damage where parts rub together. A damaged part cannot go on the line; it comes back as a rejection, a re-shipment and a delay. Vortex Ambalaj produces die-cut EVA foam inserts, XPE and PE foam interleaves and separator boxes in PP corrugated sheet for automotive parts. Each part travels in its own recess and never touches its neighbour. On closed-loop routes between plants, reusable separators replace packaging that would otherwise be thrown away after every trip. For heavy parts the foam insert is combined with a wooden crate. Density, thickness and cutting method are set for each part and proven on a sample before production.

In automotive packaging the part's dimensions are not enough on their own; the same part needs different packaging depending on how it is shipped. A one-off spare-part consignment and a tote that shuttles between two plants every day are not served by the same solution. So alongside the part itself, we start by asking about the route and how often it runs.

Painted, plated and machined surfaces

With bumpers, trim, plated interior parts and chrome-finished components, most of the damage is marking rather than breakage. A small scratch on a visible face is enough to keep the part out of assembly. Protection here starts with making sure no hard edge ever touches the surface: recess edges are cut clean, a closed-cell layer that won't mark the finish sits between part and packaging, and parts are kept apart. XPE leads on visible surfaces because of its dust-free edge and smooth face; EVA foam is used on heavier parts where impact matters too.

Closed-loop shipping and reusable separators

If the same part travels the same route between supplier and assembler every day, fresh packaging on every trip means both cost and waste. On closed-loop routes like this, boxes and separators made from PP corrugated sheet are reused each time the tote is emptied and returned. PP corrugated sheet takes up no moisture and holds its shape through repeated use. Compartments are planned around the part, so every time the tote is filled the parts travel in the same arrangement without touching. For more delicate parts, a foam insert can be added inside the separator cells.

Aftermarket spare-part shipping

A spare part goes not to the assembly line but into a service network, and it usually travels alone, by courier, through several transfers. Here the closed-loop tote gives way to a box insert that holds the part in its own carton. The part goes into a recess cut to its dimensions, and as the carton changes hands it neither shifts inside nor touches another consignment. If the same part ships often, the insert is designed once and made to the same dimensions on every order.

Heavy and oily parts

Machined engine, transmission and brake parts are heavy and often arrive oily. Here the foam first has to carry the load without collapsing; closed-cell EVA foam takes up no oil or moisture, so it keeps its form in these conditions. Beyond a certain weight the interior alone is not enough and a wooden crate comes in. That's a principle of industrial parts packaging generally, not just automotive, and it applies the same way to machine parts.

How long does packaging on a closed loop last?
Its life depends on the handling more than the material, so we don't quote a number. PP corrugated sheet takes up no moisture and holds its shape, which suits constant round trips. A separator or foam insert that wears out is remade to its approved dimensions, with no need to redesign the whole layout.
How do you stop chrome and painted parts getting marked?
We start with what will touch the finish: the layer against the paint or chrome is a smooth material that won't scratch it, and the recess edges are cut clean. For heavy parts, EVA foam is added as the load-bearing layer. Tell us which faces are visible and what the part weighs, and the choice becomes clear.
Do you also supply foam tape and seals for assembly?
Yes. Alongside packaging, we supply the foam and EVA tapes used in trim and panel assembly, and seals for applications such as doors and boots. Thickness, width and density are chosen for the application.
