Overview
The regular slotted carton is the classic box form whose four flaps meet in the middle, top and bottom; it is the box most people picture when they hear the word carton. It is cut from a single sheet of corrugated board, glued or stitched at the manufacturer's joint, and delivered flat. Because there is no separate lid and almost nothing is trimmed away from the blank, both material waste and tooling cost are at their lowest in this style.
Why the flaps meet in the middle
The flap length equals half the box width, which is why two opposing flaps meet exactly in the centre and close the face. That simple geometry also sets the box's economics: almost no area is cut away and discarded. But the same geometry imposes a limit. On a long, narrow box the flaps do not meet and an open gap is left between them, so closure depends entirely on the tape; on a very wide, shallow box the flaps overlap and part of the material carried is wasted. Outside those proportions the flap length is specially adjusted, or a lidded style becomes the more sensible option.
Taping and where the joint sits
In a regular slotted carton the only thing holding the bottom face together is the tape, so the closure method matters as much as the box itself. For light loads a single strip along the line where the flaps meet is enough. For heavy loads or long routes, H-taping is used: in addition to the centre line, tape is run across both short edges so the flaps cannot spring outwards under load. The box's second sensitive point is the manufacturer's joint; that vertical line is its weakest seam and is always positioned at a corner, because most of the stacking load runs down the corners. That joint can be glued or stitched: stitching holds more securely under heavy, sharp-cornered loads, while gluing is preferred where a clean inner surface and uninterrupted print matter. Tape width and adhesive type are chosen with the load too — not every tape holds the same way in the cold.
How to give the dimensions
Dimensions are always given internally, in the order length, width, height: the first two describe the opening, the third the depth. A few millimetres of clearance is left between the product and the wall; with no clearance the product has to be forced in and the box bulges at the sides, with too much the product moves inside and void fill becomes a cost. If several products go in one box, the size has to come from the packing arrangement rather than from a single item — two side by side and two stacked may give the same volume, but they do not give the same box. The safest approach is to state the product size, how many go in a box, and whether internal dividers are needed.
Matching your existing box
If you already have a carton that works, the fastest route is to send a flat sample. Internal dimensions, flute, paper colour and print are read straight off it, and the misunderstandings that come from working off a verbal description disappear. One caution: if the current box is already inadequate, copying it exactly copies the problem too. Are the boxes arriving crushed, tearing at a corner, or arriving intact with the product inside damaged? Talking that distinction through gives a better outcome than repeating the existing cardboard box as it stands.
The regular slotted carton is economical because it is standard, and the most used form because it is economical. Once size, flute, paper and print are set correctly, most shipments need no other solution.
