EPS Foam Cutting

EPS — expanded polystyrene — is a bulky, very light protective material. Packaging uses it for cost and weight: it fills a large volume for almost nothing and does not inflate the freight bill. It is not resilient, though. Compress it and it does not spring back, it breaks. That makes it strong for single-journey shipments and weak for packaging meant to be reused.

Where it fits, and where it doesn't

EPS is the right answer for corner and edge protection on bulky goods such as white goods and furniture, for cold-chain boxes, and for single-journey export packaging. Where a product is taken in and out repeatedly — a fitted case interior — EVA or PU foam is the better material: EPS crumbles quickly in that use and its cut edge sheds. How many times the product will travel decides the material.

Inside boxes, cases and crates

Case liners are cut to the internal geometry of whatever the product travels in. What separates them from an in-box layout is that they bear against rigid walls and usually carry a heavier load. PE foam does two jobs here: it gives a contact face that will not scratch, and it takes up the tolerance in the case's internal dimension so the part cannot move.

Cutting method

EPS is cut with a hot wire: the wire seals the edge as it cuts, so the surface comes out smooth and sheds less. Blocks are sliced to thickness first, then contoured. Very fine detail and sharp internal corners are limited by the bead structure of the material — where the geometry is precise, EVA or XPE is the better recommendation.

Do you cut signage or 3D letters from EPS?
No. Our scope is packaging and protection — in-box fill, corner protectors and product-specific cavities. For decor, signage and window display, a signage maker is the right supplier.
Should I use EPS or EVA?
For a single journey and a bulky product, EPS is the economical choice. Where the product is taken in and out repeatedly, EVA or PU foam is better — EPS crumbles and sheds in that use.
How is EPS shedding reduced?
Hot-wire cutting seals the edge as it cuts, which reduces shedding markedly. Where no shedding at all is acceptable, closed-cell XPE or PE foam is the better material.
