A sensitive instrument can arrive unbroken and still have its calibration disturbed by a hard knock or hours of vibration — damage that doesn't show when the case is opened, only at the first reading. The instrument is supported on the robust parts of its body, while sensitive points such as the display, connectors and probe tips are left clear. Probes, cables, adapters and calibration accessories each seat in their own recess, so a missing item is noticed before the case is closed. The first question in packaging a measuring instrument is how often it will travel. An instrument that stays on a lab bench and one that regularly goes out to site or off for calibration are not protected by the same packaging. For an instrument that travels often, the insert has to last as long as the instrument does. For one that stays put, what matters is that it gets the same care on the rare occasions it moves between labs or goes out for service.
Not every surface of an instrument can bear load. The display, button panel, connector inputs and probe tips can all be damaged if pressure lands on them. So the insert carries the instrument on the robust parts of its body, and the recess is relieved slightly opposite the sensitive areas, so no force goes straight into those points on impact. Good protective foam for a measuring instrument holds it firmly while never touching its sensitive points. Finger cut-outs that let the instrument be lifted out easily are part of the same plan.
An instrument sent for calibration makes two journeys every cycle: to the laboratory and back. Each shipment in single-use packaging means new material and new risk, whereas the same case and insert receive the instrument the same way every time. For inserts that are reused, dense EVA foam is chosen so the recess edges don't wear, and the layout is planned so the lab can lift the instrument out and put it back just as easily. With every item in its own recess, the lab can also check for missing or damaged parts faster on receipt.
A test instrument is often useless without its probe or connecting lead. An accessory found missing on site has the same effect as a failed instrument: the job can't be done. When every accessory has a recess shaped to it, an empty recess shows what's missing before the case is shut. The same layout means everyone who uses the instrument packs the case the same way.
Calibration and field measurement kits often carry a main instrument, a reference instrument or calibrator, and the accessories for both in one case. Here each recess is placed by sensitivity: the most sensitive instrument goes near the middle of the case, away from the corners and edges where force concentrates in a drop. The order of use is part of the plan too. The instrument used first goes in the easiest recess to reach, so instruments aren't taken out needlessly on site.
In instruments with electronics, and in test modules with exposed boards, static is a separate risk; these get ESD antistatic foam instead of standard foam. On displays and optical surfaces, whatever touches them must not scratch. XPE's smooth face or a velvet-textured top layer is preferred at those points.
