Overview

EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) is the standard gasket material wherever a joint is exposed to the weather. Its polymer backbone carries no double bonds, so it does not crack under ozone and UV — which is precisely why SBR or natural-rubber gaskets doing the same job outdoors break down into hairline cracks within a few seasons. It works without complaint against water, steam, moisture, glycol-based fluids and many polar chemicals.

Where EPDM belongs, and where it does not

The first question in material selection is what the gasket has to hold back. EPDM is the right answer for water, moisture, dust, air and steam, which is why it is common on field cabinets, roof details, ventilation louvres and vehicle door seals. Put it in contact with mineral oil, petrol, diesel or hydrocarbon grease, however, and it swells and softens — choosing EPDM in an oily environment renders the gasket useless in short order. That is where NBR, or another rubber matched to the medium, is needed. Temperature is the second question: EPDM stays flexible across a wide temperature range, but where sustained heat or hot oil is involved, silicone should be considered. That is also why EPDM is common on hot water and steam lines; NBR in the same place hardens quickly and loses its elasticity.

Solid or sponge

EPDM comes in two forms that do different jobs. Solid rubber is dense; it resists abrasion and pressure and belongs in bolted flanges and joints holding internal pressure. Sponge EPDM is a closed-cell foam: it compresses under far lower closing force, which suits thin sheet-metal cabinet doors, louvres closed by hand or by latch, and joints whose faces are not perfectly flat. Closed cells are critical here — because the cells are not interconnected, the material does not take up water. An open-cell foam cut for the same place absorbs water and acts as a wick rather than a seal.

Hardness, compression and why gaskets fail

Hardness describes how much the gasket resists being pressed. Too hard and it will not conform to an uneven face, so it leaks; too soft and it extrudes sideways under bolt load and its section thins out. Compression set describes how much of its original thickness the material recovers after being held compressed for a long period — on lids opened and closed often, that, not hardness, is the measure that decides. The closing mechanism enters the decision too: where bolts or latches are widely spaced, the gasket lifts off the face between two fixing points, and a softer sponge profile seals more reliably on such lids. Most early failures come not from material quality but from three causes: over-compression (the cells are crushed and never spring back), the wrong profile or thickness (the gap is larger than the gasket, or the gasket is too thick for the gap and squeezes out), and chemical incompatibility.

Cutting and delivery

EPDM gaskets are cut from sheet, strip and roll by steel-rule die, CNC or waterjet. CNC is more economical for low volumes and complex geometry, a steel-rule die for repeat production runs. Frame gaskets can be cut in one piece or joined at the corners; in large sizes one-piece cutting increases waste noticeably, so a jointed solution is usually the more sensible one. Besides flat strip, U, D and P sections are also used; the profile is chosen for the shape of the gap and the direction from which the lid presses. Adhesive backing is applied on request — peel the liner at assembly and no separate adhesive is needed. Send a drawing or a sample and a sample gasket is cut first; series production follows once fit and compression are approved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an EPDM gasket oil resistant?
No. In contact with mineral oil, petrol, diesel or hydrocarbon greases it swells and softens. Use NBR (nitrile) where oil is present. EPDM is safe with water, steam, moisture and glycol-based fluids.
Which gasket should be used outdoors?
EPDM is the outdoor standard because it does not crack under ozone and UV. SBR and natural-rubber gaskets break down under the same conditions with hairline surface cracking. Where there is no oil in the environment, EPDM is the outdoor choice.
Can you cut to my drawing?
Yes. We produce from a technical drawing, a DXF file or a sample in hand. A sample gasket is cut first; series production follows once dimensions, fit and compression are approved.
Do you supply adhesive-backed gaskets?
Yes, one face can be supplied with adhesive backing on request. Adhesion depends largely on the surface: it must be dry, clean and free of oil. On pressure-holding flange gaskets the tape only makes assembly easier — the seal itself comes from the gasket.
Is there a minimum order quantity?
