Overview
Coloured felt is a non-woven surface made by mechanically entangling fibres through needle punching. There is no warp or weft as there would be in a woven fabric, so when the material is cut there is no thread left to pull; the cut line stays exactly as it was made. That is the first reason it is so widely used for decorative cutting, lining and interlayer work.
The colour runs through, it is not a surface coat
In coloured felt the colour comes from fibre dyed before production — it is not a coating applied to the face afterwards. The practical consequence is this: whichever way you cut the material, the cut edge is the same colour as the body. In letters, logos, numbers and shapes the edge is permanently at eye level, and on a painted or coated material a fine pale line appears there. On felt it does not. For the same reason, rubbing and wear over time do not expose a different layer beneath the colour. The colour range is wide; where tonal consistency is critical we recommend cutting a whole job from a single batch, because a slight tonal difference between batches is normal.
What thickness and firmness change
Two separate properties steer the choice in felt: thickness and firmness. Thin, soft felt will not stand up on its own; it drapes, follows a curved surface, and is therefore the choice for linings, coverings and interior faces. Thick, firm felt holds its form — a cut letter stands straight, and a pad does not bottom out the moment it is pressed. In interlayer use, what sets the thickness is not the weight of the part but the height of the roughness and protrusions on the contact surface: the felt's job is to keep two faces apart, not to carry the load. In self-adhesive work a felt that is too soft thins out under pressure, so pad applications call for a firmer structure.
Cutting behaviour and edge quality
Thickness and firmness govern how felt cuts. Thin and medium felts cut cleanly and repeatably in a single stroke with a steel-rule die, which is the most economical method when thousands of the same shape are needed. Complex geometry, letters with internal cut-outs, frequently changing designs and low volumes suit oscillating-knife CNC better: there is no tooling cost and the shape is produced straight from the file. As the material gets thicker a slight fuzz can appear at the edge; this is a detail controlled by blade sharpness and cutting speed. On synthetic felts laser cutting seals the edge, but the heat can leave a darkened line, so it is not the first choice on light colours.
Where it belongs, and where it does not
Felt does three typical jobs. The first is decorative: letters, boards, window and event cutting, hobby and education kits. The second is lining — drawers and box interiors, the base of a jewellery or watch box, presentation trays; the soft surface holds the product in place and finishes the presentation. The third is as an interlayer, placed between glass, ceramic, metal or painted parts as they are stacked.
The limit has to be drawn honestly here. Felt is a barrier against **scratching and abrasion**; its fibrous surface carries no hard particles, so two parts in contact cannot mark each other. It is **not an impact absorber** — where protection against drops, knocks and vibration is needed, foam, EVA or a polyethylene layer is what does that work. Felt is often laminated onto such a foam layer as its facing; the two are not alternatives but different layers doing different jobs. Its open fibrous structure holds moisture, so it is not a material for permanently wet conditions or outdoor use.
