Die-Cut Foam Projects for Machine Parts

Machine parts cannot be protected by standard packaging: they are heavy, sharply edged and often finished to close tolerances. A gear, shaft, gearbox housing or machined casting risks both impact damage and scuffing against its neighbours in transit. Vortex Ambalaj measures each part's geometry and produces die-cut EVA foam beds that seat it exactly and hold it still for the whole journey. High-density EVA foam absorbs impact energy while its closed-cell structure resists moisture and oil. For heavy items the foam insert is combined with an ISPM-15 heat-treated wooden crate, so interior fixing and exterior load strength arrive as one solution. The same tooling repeats from sample through to series production.

The first thing that shapes packaging for a machine part is not its size but its weight. Of two parts with the same volume, one may weigh a few hundred grams and the other tens of kilos; both fit the same box, but the same foam will not protect both. So before any dimensions are taken we ask what the part weighs, where its mass is concentrated and which of its faces are machined.

Density first, thickness second

The commonest mistake with heavy parts is trying to solve protection with thickness. Thickness only supplies the distance over which an impact is absorbed; using that distance requires foam that carries the load without bottoming out. Under-specify the density and the foam crushes flat on the first handling — no absorbing distance is left, and a thick bed behaves like a thin sheet. The order is therefore fixed: density follows weight, thickness follows drop height. Both are set project by project and verified on a sample.

The centre of gravity dictates the cavity

In a gear, shaft, flange or gearbox housing the mass is rarely evenly distributed. If the region carrying the weight does not coincide with the widest contact area once the part is seated, the bed is loaded at a single point: the foam collapses there and the part works its way out of the cavity over the journey. Cavity depth and support surface are therefore derived from where the load presses, not from the part's outline. For long, slender parts two separate support points usually beat one long cavity.

Metal-on-metal contact and surface marking

The visible damage in machinery shipping is breakage; the expensive damage is marking. A ground bearing seat, a machined sealing face or a painted housing that rubs against another metal part in transit picks up a scratch that often writes the part off. The fix is not to pack the parts more tightly but to stop them touching at all: each part travels in its own cavity, dividers go between layers, and a pressure pad in the lid keeps it from shifting. Closed-cell material takes up no moisture in oily, swarf-laden conditions, so it serves as that interleaf too.

Crates, stacking and ISPM-15

Past a certain weight the interior alone is not enough: something has to carry the stacking load and take the knock of a forklift tine. The division of labour is simple — the foam bed holds the part's position, the wooden crate carries the load and surrounds the part on all six sides. Wooden packaging leaving the country has to meet ISPM-15 heat treatment; treated, marked timber does not get held up at customs. A domestic shipment carries no such requirement, which is why the crate decision follows the route as much as the weight.

Send us the part's weight, its length, width and height, which faces are sensitive and where the shipment is going. Density, thickness and cutting method are then set for that project; before any production run the fit is verified on a sample, and the approved geometry stays the same on every batch after it.
