How a valuable product is presented depends as much on its packaging as on the product itself. For jewellery, medals, plaques, awards and corporate gifts, the packaging directly shapes what the brand is felt to be worth.

Velvet Boxes and Interior Protection

Velvet boxes do two jobs at once. The velvet surface over a rigid board construction gives the piece its finish, while the EVA or XPE insert inside holds the product still through handling and storage and keeps it from knocks and scratches.

An Interior Made for the Product

The interior has to be made for the specific product. Compartments cut to its exact dimensions protect it properly and, just as importantly, create the moment when the box is opened. In corporate gifts and award ceremonies that moment is the brand.

Logo printing and bespoke design carry corporate identity into the packaging itself, and details like a metal clasp both secure the box and raise its perceived quality.

Velvet or EVA? In Practice, Both

The question gets asked as a choice, but the two are layers rather than rivals. EVA or XPE builds the structure and the cavity — cut to the product's dimensions, this is the layer that holds the piece still and takes any impact. Velvet or flock is applied to the visible face of that layer; its job is touch and appearance, not protection.

So "a velvet box" is really two decisions: the geometry of the cavity inside and the covering over it. Get the cavity wrong and velvet will not save it — the product moves inside the box, and that is obvious the moment it is opened.

When Flock Is the Better Covering

Flock is a velvet-like finish made by electrostatically bonding short cut fibres to a surface. Its advantage over velvet fabric is that it lines complex, deep cavities without creasing: fabric wrinkles at sharp internal corners, while flock follows the surface. For small, recessed geometries — jewellery and medal cavities — that is decisive.

The Moment of Opening: Fit and Removal

Cavity tolerance in a presentation box serves a different purpose than in protective packaging. Protective packaging aims to lock the part in place; a presentation box needs the product held still and yet lifted out effortlessly. Too tight, and whoever opens the gift ends up tugging at it — precisely at the moment the box was meant to make its impression.

The practical answer is a finger relief at one edge of the cavity: the product becomes graspable without the fit having to be loosened.

Branding and Personalisation

Branding on the lid is usually applied by foil blocking, screen printing or embossing. Foil gives the strongest contrast on velvet; embossing leaves a quieter, tactile mark. A logo worked into the interior cavity appears when the box opens and is often more memorable than anything on the outside.

Packaging for gift products is better treated as part of the brand experience than as a line on the cost sheet.
