EPDM or EVA? A Gasket and Material Selection Guide

EPDM and EVA are the two materials most often compared in sealing and protection projects. The short answer: for gaskets that must work outdoors for years under sun and heat, EPDM rubber is right; for indoor impact absorption, cushioning and economical sealing, EVA foam is.

The decision is never made on one criterion, though — temperature range, UV exposure, pressure, weight and budget are weighed together. What Is EPDM Rubber? Structure and Properties

EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) is the synthetic rubber family's outdoor specialist. The low proportion of unsaturated bonds in its molecular structure gives it exceptional resistance to ageing from ozone and UV. It is produced in two main forms, solid and sponge, and its hardness (Shore A) is chosen to suit the application.

  • Temperature range: roughly -40 °C to +120 °C, with special formulations rated higher
  • High resistance to UV, ozone and weather — holds its form outdoors for years

What Is EVA Foam? Structure and Properties

EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) is a closed-cell foam. EVA foam specialises in protection more than sealing: it damps impact and vibration, absorbs no water, is light, and takes precision die cutting extremely well. It is produced in a range of densities, thicknesses and colours, and its self-adhesive form reduces fitting to seconds.

Which Should You Choose?

The practical answer to when EPDM is the right gasket hides in three criteria: environment, temperature and service life.

Choose EPDM when the gasket will sit outdoors, face sun and rain, work in hot zones such as an engine bay or enclosure, or hold its form under pressure for years. Examples: electrical enclosure lid profile, exterior door and window gasket, machine cover sealing, expansion joint gaskets.

Choose sponge EPDM when one part must both seal and cushion — lid gaskets that compress under low closing force are where this form excels.

Choose EVA foam when the job is indoors, when the aim is impact and vibration damping or cushioning, and when weight and cost lead. Examples: vibration pad under equipment, in-box protective layout, indoor dust gasket, self-adhesive gap filling.

Choose silicone for food or medical contact, or temperatures above +150 °C, where budget is the secondary concern.

Two materials are often combined in one project: in an electrical enclosure, the lid is sealed with EPDM profile while the equipment inside is isolated from vibration with EVA foam pads. The right combination is both cheaper and longer-lived than forcing a single material to do everything.

How Are EPDM and EVA Gaskets Processed?

Both materials are converted from sheet, roll and profile stock into project-specific parts. The main processes: precision die cutting (thousands of identical parts, repeated exactly), CNC blade cutting (samples and low volumes), drilling and punching (mounting holes), self-adhesive backing, and lamination with other materials. Cut geometry is designed to your product's exact form, including holes, contours and profile detail.

What Determines Gasket Prices?

EPDM and EVA gasket prices cannot be quoted as a single fixed figure. The main variables are:

  • Material type and form: solid EPDM, sponge EPDM and EVA foam sit in different cost classes
  • Thickness, hardness (Shore) and density
  • Part geometry: holes, contours and profile detail drive tooling cost
  • Order quantity: tooling cost divided across more parts lowers the unit price
  • Extra processes: adhesive backing, lamination, custom colour

Can an EVA gasket be used outdoors?
It can, in short-term or shaded applications. But where a gasket sits in direct sun and is expected to last for years, EPDM is the right choice.
Are sponge EPDM and EVA foam the same thing?
No. Sponge EPDM is rubber-based and keeps its outdoor durability, while EVA foam comes from a different polymer family. They can look alike, but their performance profiles differ.
Is EPDM resistant to oil?
No — oil and hydrocarbon contact is EPDM's weak point. For gaskets in oily environments, alternatives such as NBR (nitrile) are considered.
Can both materials be cut to size?
